Completed in March of 2023, this 9,200 square foot fully inclusive playspace is filled with playful, accessible features built to inspire children of all abilities. The PlayBooster® mainstructure is connected by accessible ramps giving kids access to multiple sensory panels, climbers, and slides. The We-Go-Round®, We-Go-Swing® and We-Saw™ create a variety of play experiences for children of all abilities to enjoy.
A Playground Designed for Inclusion
Musical features like the Xylofun Panel® and Rhapsody® Chimes encourage play with sound, while a custom bird-themed sensory hut creates a space for tactile and sensory engagement. A custom concrete-sculpted pear tree archway, DigiFuse® panels, and poured-in-place surfacing carry a pear theme throughout the space. The pear theme nods to the roots of hometown, Pearland, Texas, and is emphasized with a fun “seek-and-find” element. SkyWays® Joined Hypar Sails and integrated shade help protect visitors from the sun while a seamless poured-in-place surfacing ensures a fully accessible playspace.
First of its Kind Playspace
Over the course of 7 years, the City of Pearland worked with the Forever Parks Foundation, Inclusion Matters® by Shane’s Inspiration, and the Lone Star Recreation team to plan a playground that would be accessible to everyone. They wanted a place where not only children of all abilities could play, but where their caregivers could engage in the fun right with them. What resulted was Brazoria County’s first inclusive playground, a universally designed, sensory-rich environment that allows children of all abilities to play and socialize.
“This was our first time at a park like this! My daughter loved it so much. Usually she just sits on the side lines watching her brothers play – this was a game changer!”
Katie Gonzales, parent after visiting Ed Thompson Inclusive Park for the first time.
A Playground for the Whole Community
Since being built, this incredible play space has been fully embraced by the City of Pearland and surrounding communities. From community organizations to collegiate occupational therapy programs, this amazing playspace has created new opportunities for learning and growth. Wendy Lentino, Board President of T21 Family Outreach shared, “The work you do for our children is deeply appreciated. The children in our non-profit absolutely love the new playground! Thank you again for going above and beyond for our children. Your hard work is not going unnoticed.”
